Dr. Trinidad and his assistant Brittany were fabulous with my adult daughter with special needs. They were kind, immensely patient, and super sweet. Everyone we met in the office was pleasant and professional. I would highly recommend this office to anyone and especially those who need a little extra help. They deserve more than 5 stars in my book!

Why Choose A Pediatric Dentist?

Pediatric dental specialists complete a minimum of two years of training following dental school. This additional extensive training focuses on the clinical and behavior management of infants, children, and adolescents, including patients with special needs. The very young, pre-teens, and teenagers all need different approaches in working with their individual behavioral needs, guiding their dental growth and development, and helping them avoid future dental problems. A pediatric dentist is best qualified to meet these needs.

Good oral health is an important part of overall health. As your child’s dental home, we will have the opportunity to implement preventive dental health habits to keep your child free from dental and oral disease. From the moment you walk into the practice, your child will be embraced in our warm, caring and child-friendly environment.

When Should I First Take My Child to the Dentist?

pediatric dentist teaching young child how to brush in dental chairThe American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), American Dental Association (ADA), and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) all recommend establishing a dental home for your child by age one. Children who have a dental home are more likely to receive appropriate preventive and routine oral health care. Similar to how your child’s pediatrician serves as a home base for health, we would feel privileged to serve as your child’s dental home as they grow.

Why Should I Take My Child To The Dentist At An Early Age?

You may be wondering when to take your child to their first dental appointment and why so early. At Lindner Dental Associates, we believe that children should first go to the dentist at the age of 1. Your child’s first dental visit at age 1 allows your child to be established in a dental home. Children can start to have cavities as young as 6 months of age. Since treatment of decay in young children can be costly and traumatic for the parent and child, our emphasis is placed on preventing the dental disease before it starts.

Establishing a relationship with a pediatric dentist early in a child’s life helps to establish a plan of action in the event of an emergency involving the mouth. Unfortunately, injuries involving the teeth and surrounding areas are common as your infant learns to walk and explore his or her environment. By taking them into the dentist early, they will be more comfortable with their appointments and will prevent worse dental conditions from happening later in life.

How To Prepare My Child For Their Pediatric Dental Appointment

It may be nerve wracking, for both you and your child, before their first dental visit. But there is nothing to worry about! At Lindner Dental Associates, we’re here to help. We will do whatever we can to make your child comfortable in our chairs whether it is their first visit, or they’ve been coming to our office for a while. Take a look at some helpful tips to prepare your child for their pediatric dentist appointment!

● Talk positively about their appointment
● Read books about the dentist before their appointment to get them comfortable

● Schedule their appointment accordingly and at the right time
● Tell them you will reward them with something after their appointment
● Start them at an early age so they can become comfortable and familiar with their dentist

Treatment of Cavities in Children

Nitrous Oxide For Children

Small procedures in cooperative children can often be done in our office under local anesthesia (numbing), with or without nitrous oxide sedation. At Lindner Dental Associates, we have mounted tv screens where children can select a movie to watch during their procedure. Tell – Show – Do is a method we use to explain and prepare children for their dental treatment. First, we explain what is to be done using friendly, age – appropriate terms and descriptions. Then, we show how it is done, and finally we perform the procedure. The most common form of sedation we use in our office is nitrous oxide (laughing gas). The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes this method as a very safe, effective technique to help relax anxious children during treatment.

In-Office Sedation For Children

In-office Sedation is an alternative for children who need a moderate level of sedation to complete their dental treatment. This method of treatment allows your child to complete dental procedures without stress and discomfort. We work with a sedation team comprised of a pediatric anesthesiologist and nurses to provide dental care in a safe, caring environment in our dental office.

Hospital Care at the Elliot 1 Day Surgery Center

Some children require an extensive amount of dental work. In these circumstances, it is difficult for a small child to cooperate and often the treatment cannot be done properly in an office setting. Under these conditions, we may recommend treating your child in a hospital setting under general anesthesia. All treatment, including dental exam, radiographs, cleaning, and restorative work, is completed when the child is asleep – thus giving a child a fresh start with their oral health when they wake up.

FAQ About Pediatric Dentistry

What is the difference between a pediatric dentist and a general dentist?
A pediatric dentist takes extra courses to specialize and ensure your child receives the gentle dental care they deserve. These courses are two additional years on top of their undergrad and dental school years. Pediatric dentists focus only on baby teeth (or young children with some baby and some adult teeth), while a general dentist focuses more on care for adult patients. Pediatric dentists also try to make their appointments more fun, welcoming, and outgoing to keep their young patients content. Like a pediatrician, a pediatric dentist caters care to the child and has the training to do this effectively.

What age is pediatric dentistry for children?
The age for pediatric dentistry can vary depending on the patient, and it technically doesn't need to "stop" immediately at a certain age. Pediatric dentistry is commonly for children starting at six months old and up to 18 years of age. Pediatric dentists typically see patients who still have baby teeth or a mix of baby and adult teeth. Some pediatric dentists may also continue to see special needs adults if preferred.

Why should my child see a pediatric dentist?
If you are wondering why your child should see a pediatric dentist instead of a general family dentist, it is the skills a pediatric dentist has caring for children and diagnosing problems early. Pediatric dentists specialize in your child's teeth and take special courses to keep them comfortable. Your child should see a pediatric dentist early to learn to become comfortable with the dentist and discover the benefits of healthy teeth. Pediatric dentists are the experts at providing a warm and welcoming environment for your child while giving them the attentive care they deserve.

How often should my child see a pediatric dentist?
Just like adults, children should visit their pediatric dentist every six months for a cleaning and exam. Starting at the early age of 1, young children can get an advantage by starting early and preventing cavities as they get older. Teaching them the importance of good oral health at a young age will set them up for success in the future. Some pediatric dentists suggest setting up appointments every three months to get them familiar with tooth brushing and the dentist environment.

How to choose the best pediatric dentist for your child?
The best pediatric dentist for your child is someone who has experience and knowledge in dealing with a child's mouth. Baby teeth are a little different than adult teeth, so they are not treated the same. A pediatric dentist who is caring yet provides thorough dental care for your child is the perfect dentist. Learn more about Lindner Dental Associates and why we’re Bedford, NH’s go-to for pediatric dental care!

How do I know if my child has a toothache?
There may be some obvious and not-so-obvious signs that your child has a toothache. Some obvious signs may include a swollen face, red gums, tooth pain or sensitivity to touch, hot or cold items. Other signs of a children’s toothache would be a fever, fussiness, and tiredness. If you notice any of these signs, be sure to contact your pediatric dentist for an exam.

Why do children need X-rays?
X-rays are important for children to have because they provide your dentist with a complete exam of the mouth. X-rays go behind the scenes of what your pediatric dentist can see with their eye, so it’s important to ensure your dentist is able to see how your child’s teeth are developing and any potential problems. X-rays are safe and recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry to ensure optimal oral health.
